Westminster School’s U10s Prep Schools Tournament

Sunday 16 September 2018

by Jack Esiri

On Sunday 16th September the Year 5 A and B team were at home at Vincent Square for a tough 20 team tournament, hosted and organised by the Great School.

The A team were in group C while the B team had a tough group B to handle.

A nervous A team kicked off as the B team cheered them on to a comfortable 2-0 victory against Newton Prep school, with two stylish goals by Pietro Greco.

After the A team watched the Bs to a hard start , they then wiped out Thomas’ Kensington with a dominating 3-0 win, with 2 goals by Reggie Higgins and one scored by Jack Esiri. All goals scored with panache!

Next for the As was a challenging game against a strong Shrewsbury House. After their two early wins, unfortunately they lost this third game of the Round Robin 4-1, with the goal scored by Jack.

But this game would change everything

Meanwhile the Bs beat the previous year’s champion Rokeby 1-0 but just lost out on a place in the Cup. The As were second place in their group and qualified.

Sadly for the Bs they put up a good fight against Highgate B team in the Plate quarter final but lost. Still give tons of credit to the Bs for their great play and sportsmanship . Now all eyes are on the As…

For revenge against Highgate As, the A team had a nervy last couple of minutes but scrambled through to a 2-0 victory in the Cup quarter finals with goals by Reggie and Jack.

Still as the Bs cheered them on again, Westminster As now played Thomas’ Fulham in the semis. Jack got two goals and nearly scored a hat-rick when he took the ball over two defenders, but the finish was scuffed. Thomas’ Fulham did pull one back late on but we cruised on into the final

Give lots of credit to Felix Koelch for stepping up to be the A team keeper as Toby Postelwhite had another commitment. Felix didn't just step up, he was steady and made multiple crucial saves. Also to Max Lui who always stayed solid at the back and to Aslan Eler who worked his socks off as he ran up and down the pitch.

Into the final against who else but that fierce opponent Shrewsbury House. After the tightest 12 minutes of the tournament with great defence both ways, in we went to extra time. This tournament’s rare rules for extra time were : it’s 4 minutes long, golden goal and every minute they coach would take one player from each team off the pitch. So after 3 minutes of extra time now there was just Jack, Pietro and Felix left on the field. As the opposition’s sweeper keeper linked up with his other team-mates, he recklessly gave the ball away to Jack on the edge of his own area, he took one touch looked up , saw the defender on the edge of the empty nets area and Jack lobed the ball over the defender to score the winning goal in the final to win the tournament. The tournament began in 2007 and this was the first time Westminster Under won it!

We thank everyone involved and both Westminster teams have a huge future ahead of them.
